It all started with a birthday…

In 2004 Luke Avenue founder, Maddy, wanted to surprise her mother with a birthday cake.  There was one small problem though; Maddy didn’t know the first thing about the science of baking.  Figuring the domestic goddess, Nigella Lawson, was incorrect in her ¼ tsp measurement of baking powder, Maddy went ahead with mixing in a ¼ CUP of baking powder.  Phew, crisis averted.

In awe of the cake’s impressive stature Maddy set about smothering it in buttercream before proudly whisking it away to her mother and awaiting party guests.  Needless to say, the chocolate soap cake was not quite the hit she’d imagined.

Determined to master the art, Maddy spent hours in the kitchen baking cupcakes and before too long was receiving requests for children’s birthday cakes from clients at her work on Sydney’s North Shore.  By 2006 she’d become so busy and inspired filling these requests that she enlisted the help of her mother and sister, and without a car, they began delivering cakes via public transport throughout Mosman and Balmoral.

Bus drivers became familiar with Maddy and her family who were always racing to the bus stop, arms laden with boxes of cakes and cookies, and often would open the bus doors for them along various sections on their route.  This kindness was something Maddy will never forget.

By 2007 Maddy landed her first catering contract and she knew, with a little luck, this would be her ticket to purchasing her very first car and would open new opportunity and a welcome ease for deliveries throughout Sydney.

With zero knowledge of the process of purchasing a vehicle, Maddy set about contacting car dealers to ask for advice and assistance.  She didn’t have the funds just yet, but soon she would! Many turned her down.  Not one to give up she tried one last dealership in Auburn, and although they knew she hadn’t the funds, they were kind enough to teach her everything.  She was overwhelmed with gratitude.

After landing a second baking contract in 2008, Maddy finally managed to pull together the funds, and without hesitation she took a bus straight back to that dealership in Auburn and purchased her very first car.  That dealership was on Luke Avenue.
